All traditional foam filled SwimSpa Covers get too heavy to lift. Yet exactly how and why may come as a surprise. It has nothing to do with rain so it matters not just how steep the taper is, that cover will certainly still get heavy. If it was rain that was making SwimSpa Covers heavy after that putting a roofing over the spa would stop the SwimSpa Covers from getting heavy. But it doesn’t.
Moisture getting trapped in the foam is what makes SwimSpa Covers to heavy to lift. Yet if it’s not the rain, just how does the water get in there? The answer is steam from the Hot swimspa water. When water turns into steam it is a much smaller sized particle compared to a drop of water.
Vapor could get into in a much smaller sized location, like say for instance the spaces in the foam. Once it cools back down and changes back to water once more, it’s trapped inside the foam. Once caught in the foam the water will not drain out so a drain hole won’t help. The only means the water can return from the foam would certainly be to vaporize. In order to evaporate, the SwimSpa Covers would need to be removed from the source of steam (the swimspa) and put in a completely dry, well ventilated area. In a few months the moisture will evaporate out of the foam.
The problem has nothing to do with how well the SwimSpa Covers is cared for or just how much plastic protector is rubbed on it. The issue is the foam. The sort of foam used of in SwimSpa Covers is designed to be used as insulation in DRY conditions. For example it works well in floorings, walls as well as ceilings (provided it is kept dry) and is terrific for refrigeration applications.
Nonetheless if the same foam is exposed to steam, the insulation it might offer is swiftly reduced to something comparable to damp plywood.
So why is foam still being utilized in SwimSpa Covers? It’s cheap and also it’s the industry standard. But even if everybody is doing it does not make it the best choice.
A hundred years ago the common mode of travel was the horse. The horse had been the standard for centuries. At one time city officials were predicting that in the not to distant future, city streets would be buried in several feet of horse manure. Fortunately, something better came along.
A far better concept for Lightweight SwimSpa Covers would be one that removes the foam, still insulates yet remains light weight and easy to use.
